WRITING THE BODY OF A PAPER

One “formula” for writing a body paragraph
Sentence 1: topic sentence. This topic sentence should directly relate to your control.
Sentence 2: Next, explain or expand on the idea in that topic sentence.
Sentence 3: Give an example from the text (or from one of your sources) to support your point.
Sentence 4: Explain that example. (what the author is saying, in other words, is…)
Sentence 5: Relate that example to your topic sentence.
Sentence 6: Give another example to support your point.
Sentence 7: Explain that example. (what this critic is saying, in plain English, is…)
Sentence 8: Relate that example to your topic sentence

Using this formula, you have written 8 sentences, (½ page), and used 2 source quotes
Remember:
  1. Make a point.
  2. Explain it.
  3. Give an example or quote to support it.
  4. Explain/relate that example to your topic sentence, which in turn relates back to your thesis. Never give a quote and then leave it with no explanation.
